On this guided tour you will discover the old fishing community of Arraial Ferreira Neto, established here during the 1940’s. Throughout the tour you will learn about the history of tuna fishing in Portugal and the rest of the world. This is the only fishermen village of this kind in the whole country.
As we explore it and visit places like the elementary school, the chapel, the former industrial and the residential area, you will discover how this community of fisherman lived. At the top of the former watch-tower you will be delighted by the views of the surrounding landscape. From this point there are amazing vistas over the saltpans, the marshlands, the beautiful city of Tavira, the islands of Tavira and Cabanas, stretching right the way to the city of Vila Real de Santo António.
We’ll make a stop at the Tuna Museum, where you’ll see a model of the almadrava, referred to by the Arabs as the bullfighting of the sea, and you’ll discover how tuna was caught using a complex system of nets anchored on the sea bed. An interesting video will enable you to relive the past of this ancient art. This is where the tour to Arraial Ferreira Neto ends, a site classified as a National Trust Building.
Tuna fishing has long ceased here and nowadays Arraial Ferreira Neto is a resort, the Vila Galé Albacora. Located at the very heart of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, which was elected as one of the 7 Natural Wonders of Portugal, this resort is oriented towards ecotourism. From this point you have several options available such as a boat trip, a kayak tour, bike rides or walking tours to explore this paradise in the Algarve.
